I began racing where I grew up in Tasmania, the small island south of mainland Australia. Suffering asthma as I child it was recommended that I try as many sports as possible. My father was a racing cyclist at the time and cycling allowed me to get out and explore the rural area that we lived in so it was a perfect fit. After becoming Australian and Oceania junior road champion, I progressed through the Australian Government’s AIS sport system before turning professional with Italian team De Nardi in 2000. I was in well over my head and hardly finished a race that season but it was a great experience. I then spent 2 years racing as an amateur in Holland and Belgium where I felt like I really learned how to race my bike, winning some good races and having the opportunity to turn professional with Team Barloworld in 2003. This time around I was ready to be a pro and over the 3 years I spent in the team won races on 5 different continents, the biggest being stages in Tour de Langkawi, Tour of Qinghai Lake and Sun Tour in Australia.

A frustrating time at the end of 2005 found me questioning my desire to continue as a cyclist, but an opportunity came up to come to the US and race with the Toyota-United team. Hesitant at first about coming to the US, it was truly a great move that I have never regretted, as I met my wife in Boulder, CO where we live with our two cats Mr T and Miss Morla and enjoy hiking in the mountains and fishing which I recently rediscovered for the first time since I was a kid. Almost a year off the bike with a knee injury in 2008 was another challenging time, but it allowed me to try studying for the first time since I was 16 and I’m now a qualified massage therapist. Following the surgery on my knee, I raced for two seasons with Hotel San Jose in TX as I rebuilt. It was a great time and I experienced a whole new view of the United States driving coast to coast finding races. After a 2011 season spent with Australian team V Australia, I am very excited to be a part of Elbowz Racing in 2012. Most of all, I’m looking forward to hopefully teaching the younger guys a thing or two so that they can get the same amount of enjoyment out of cycling as I have over the last 24 years. And of course I hope we win a lot, as the competition is the thing that drives me most as a cyclist.
